News Roundup: Fingerprints and Heart Biometrics

Last week at FindBiometrics fingerprints dominated the industry news as we continued our featured examination of biometrics in healthcare. The FIDO Alliance was in the news for the third week in a row, while identification deployments and market research rounded out the headlines.

Here’s a look back on the week that was:

Fingerprints

News Roundup: Fingerprints and Heart BiometricsFingerprint biometrics were all over the news last week, particularly (though not suprisingly) thanks to mobile authentication news. Synaptics announced a major milestone in its Natural ID technology’s shipments, Fingerprint Cards AB announced that its sensors are featured on a new handset form Gionee, and leaked images suggested that the upcoming Moto X smartphone will sport an embedded fingerprint sensor.

Apple made the news too, thanks to WWDC. We received an update on Apple Pay and reported on new patents that suggest Touch ID will be featured on Macbooks. Android M continued to keep us talking about its native fingerprint biometrics support and we also reported on fingerprint-based employee pre-screening at CARCO.

Strong Authentication

Passwords and PINsIt was the third week in a row that the FIDO Alliance announced new high profile members. This week though, the big differentiator was that the consortium welcomed its first government members, unveiling its newest level of membership. Meanwhile, Daon announced that its Identity X platform has been FIDO certified.

Outside of the Alliance, we reported on the newest news regarding Wells Fargo and its pursuit og mobile biometric customer authentication.

Healthcare and Heart Biometrics

HiResOur Healthcare Month continued this week with a look at how biometric patient ID can overcome barriers of language and literacy in vaccination deployments. Patient ID made the industry news too, with a Louisiana hospital adopting the isis-based RightPatient for its patient management efforts. We even saw a rare example of how vital biometrics can be used for strong authentication this week, with news that a new cardiac biometric solution has been developed by Olea. The following links will give you a good idea of how healthcare and heart biometrics readings fit into last week’s identity discussion.

Identification

tumblr_n9mlpkkAQo1tbxd4lo1_1280NEC Corporation made the news last week with the announcement of a new hospitality administration system that biometrically identifies customers. The police in Leicestershire, meanwhile, announced that they are using facial recognition to ID wanted persons and a music festival and we received an update on the status of TattC – NIST’s tattoo recognition initiative.
