Biometrics Industry News Roundup: The Road To Biometrics UnPlugged

July is here which puts us two and a half months away from the second annual Biometrics UnPlugged event in Tampa, Florida. This being the case, we have begin to prepare with The Road To Biometrics UnPlugged, a summer long event meant to shed light on some of the topics that will be discussed. First on the docket is commerce, a topic that we started to tackle this week with the usual week-one Primer.

In terms of Industry News, this past week we saw biometrics in hospitals, detention facilities and all around the world with global spanning market research and a new partnership slated to expand the reach of finger vein recognition technology.

Fujisoft and mofiria announced a global strategic partnership this week that stands to expand the international availability of the latter’s Finger Vein Authentication (FVA) technology. Fujisoft will be being its development experience and systems integration expertise to the table, while mofiria aims to, as company CEO Satoshi Amagai put it, “become a leading international solution provider within the biometric authentication industry.”

Staying on the topic of finger-based factors, a new report made available through Markets and Markets this week gave us some numbers to attribute to the clearly growing fingerprint sensor market. The wide range of applications for fingerprint biometric sensors is named as major growth factor, with the report predicting that the global market for the devices will shoot to a projected $14.35 billion by the year 2020, with a CAGR of 16.8 percent.

In the verticals this week we saw identity management entering the healthcare space and law enforcement.

M2SYS Healthcare Solutions announced this week that Archbold Memorial Hospital has chosen its RightPatient technology to bring efficiency and fraud protection to its operations. The patient tracking solution was chosen for its multimodal nature, allowing the hospital administration to select a contactless authentication process that best suits the hygienic needs in the deployment.

Meanwhile, Unisys Corporation’s local subsidiary in the Netherlands, Unisys Nederland N.V., announced that it has been selected but the Dutch Custodial Institutions Service to bring biometrics to the nation’s penitentiaries. The agreement will see Unisys delivering, implementing and managing a new Basic Provision Biometrics solution for more than 50 facilities across the country, the purpose of which is to more efficiently track the identities of detainees.

Finally, speaking of criminals, this week in the findBIOMETRICS blog, Pop Cultural Identity Management, we took a look at bank fraud in Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Eventual saviour of the human race, John Connor, uses an Atari Portfolio to jackpot an ATM in the 1991 thriller, and we take the opportunity to examine that character developing scene through the lens of identity management and commerce.

Stay posted to findBIOMETRICS throughout July as we continue down the road to findBIOMETRICS. Be sure to follow us on Twitter so you don’t miss a beat.
